Sustainability

Our Ethos
As a small business, we feel it's really important to create and maintain a healthy and sustainable way of working whilst shaping our business for the future and protecting the planet we live on. We are constantly looking at the best ways to work in terms of how we work together, how our hand made products are made and making sure we work alongside other like minded people and businesses who help supply and deliver our service requirements as sustainably and efficiently as possible.

Whilst we embrace the creativity of making beautiful lighting for the home and interiors sector, we will be continually monitoring how we can improve on our sustainability in lots of different ways.  Here are few key areas in which we are striving to make a difference by keeping our sustainability goals in mind.

Small Batch
As all our lighting collections are made to order here in our Derbyshire studio, it means we can keep production costs and fabric requirements just at the right level to meet demand without wasting time, resources and money. It also means each product you receive is completely unique, made with time honoured techniques and of the highest quality.

Fabrics
We use a range of fabrics including organic silks, linens and cottons which are all ordered in small batches with any off cuts being stored and re used in further product production of our own or handed to local charities and projects for further use.

Linen
We love working with raw materials such as organic cottons and natural linens. The flax plant, from which linen derives, is responsible for only a small environmental footprint as it can thrive in poor soil, requires no irrigation, only rainwater and needs no pesticides or fertilisers to grow. Linen yarn is also completely bio degradable.

We are pleased to announce that we have also recently commissioned a new fringing for our lampshades made entirely from linen which is loomed locally here in Derbyshire especially for us, which is not only environmentally friendly but also helps to create strong and healthy community and connections with other small local businesses.

Organic Cotton
We like to use organic cotton as organic farmers use natural methods to grow cotton, not fossil-fuel based fertilisers. By working with nature, farmers build healthy soils which store carbon and help to combat climate change.

Organic cotton is better for water than conventionally produced cotton as this type of farming creates healthy soils, which act like a sponge, soaking up water during floods and holding it for longer in times of drought. Hazardous synthetic pesticides and fertilisers are banned in organic farming, so rivers, lakes and drinking water are kept cleaner too.

Silk
We use a number of silks from renowned British silk and fabric manufacturers and also a number of small businesses who promote the use of 'peace silks' where silk is produced without harming or killing the silkworms. Coupled with this we use a range of organic bamboo silks also known as ‘vegan silk’. This fabric is woven using 100% organic bamboo fibres and Oeko-Tex certified dyes.

Wood
We work with a just a couple of local independent highly skilled artisans and wood turners to produce our beautiful lampstands. The woods used are oak, sapele and beech which are all sustainably sourced and certified.

Packaging
All our packaging is recyclable or fully biodegradable. We use a mix of recycled paper, cardboard and biodegradable bubble wrap to protect our products during transit. We use paper tape rather than plastic tape and we reuse any type of packaging that comes into the studio. We want your products to arrive on your doorstep in perfect condition but we are also aware of the environmental impact that packaging has and aim to be as sustainable as we can.

Delivery
We are proud to work with our local DPD courier network who on July 11 2022, submitted a net-zero ambition to the Science Based Target initiative to achieve a 'Net-zero emissions target by 2040'. Their further plans for achieving sustainability include the following:

Pioneering carbon reduction initiative/ carbon neutral since 2012.

Growing their low-emission fleet.

Switching to renewable energy in their buildings and depots.

Monitoring air quality in cities across Europe.

'As a pioneer in its sector, the company is taking decisive action to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 and commits to reduce its scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 43% by 2030 and 90% by 2040 from a 2020 baseline - 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.'
